Accurate mapping to minimize border conflicts in south eastern borderlands of Nigeria

Abstract

Maps are indispensable tool for national planning and development. No nation can manage its affairs without them. This is because, maps are required to enable the general administration of an area to function in defence, communication, education, land use planning, development of natural resources to mention a few. In spite of this, some government mapping establishments in Nigeria are now using maps as tools for achieving selfish/sectional interest especially those having to do with boundaries of states and local Government Areas. This paper uses the cartographic method (map based approach) to identify discrepancies in the representation of boundaries on maps prepared by Survey Departments in States within the South Eastern Borderlands of Nigeria. The paper recommends accurate mapping and related strategies to reduce tension and enhance development in border areas of the country.
