Abstract

This study was conducted in Uyo, the capital city ofAkwa lbom State, Nigeria. The objective is to formulate models for estimating future trip generation patterns in the city. To achieve this, relationships among the types of trips generated and the socio-economic parameters of households were established.Housebold sample survey was conducted and data were obtained from 480 households in 25 communities randomly selected in five demarcated zones within the city. Eight dependent variables and six independent variables were selected for the stiady. The dependent variables were; work trip, market trip, health trip, school trip, funeral trip, wedding trip, recreational trip and religious trip. Independent variables (socio-economic parameters) were: distance, household size, income, education, occupation and car ownership.Regression models have been formulated for estimation of future worktrips, markets trips, health trips, funeral trips and wedding trip. These models provide the basis, for a new urban development policy that will ultimately bring about long term/permanent solution to the chaotic traffic problem usually experienced on the major roads of the city.
